Newbie in WMass

I'm Dave.

New to the hobby. Reading a book my daughter (#2) bought, "Metal Detecting for Beginners, 2nd edition" led me to search for sites online. My wife and daughter #3 bought me a cheap MD to start out with and see if I like the hobby, a Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II. I'm currently trying to map out areas to search and learn my MD, and hopefully create enough spark to upgrade in the future. I'm sure I'll be here searching for answers to questions. Haven't found any active clubs in the area, hopefully can locate a "guide" or two to help me learn.

I'm a USAF vet that did 13+ years, got out hoping to join the local FD but they were in the process of budget cuts also so I turned 45 degrees and became a 911 dispatcher and have been here 20+ years. I'm looking toward retirement in 5 or so years so the wife wants me to get a hobby that gets me out of the house! I've got 3 daughters and 6 grand kids that we adore.

ask neighbors, friends, family, co-workers first if they own old farm land or old house first
then maybe old houses for sale - then strangers
ask hunters if they know any cellar holes in woods or old timers in town
i hunted easthampton when i was a kid in the 70s with inexpensive machine
