Newbie's Finds

Well I got my MD last week and so far I have found 10 pennies 1 nickle 2 dimes and 1 quarter. all are clad and most were found at about 2-3 inches. however, there is one thing that my MD has registered in coin mode that i was not able to retrieve because its under a small old trees root system. the tree is gone though and i plan to go back tomarrow with a pick to try to and lift it out of the ground. anyway this forum is what really got me to just start treasure hunting rather than just thinking about it so thanks to all of you.

Re: Newbie's Finds

Sounds like you're doing good. Just keep at it and those wheaties and silver will start showing up. ;D

I hope you find something nice under the old tree. What type of machine do you use and how old do you estimate the tree being?

Re: Newbie's Finds

I don't know that you would want to take a pick to it. If it's a park, your liable to cause quite a stir. Not to mention possibly destroying an old coin.
After you pin point it, try making a small tunnel under the root. It could be lying just under it. If you can't find it, then feel the under side of the root. I've found more than one coin that was partially imbedded on the underside, because of a root growing around it.
Also if it's a very large root, because of the displacement of soil and minerals. A detector can give a false or ghost signal. In other words, fake you out, not real. HH

NICE START AND I HOPE THE FINDS KEEP COMING. PICS PLEASE

Re: Newbie's Finds

Thanks for the advice rvbvetter. I tried to tunnel under it today and no luck so maybe it is a false signal.
Vinylecords4Ever, I have an Ace 250 and the tree could not have been too old before it got too close of a trim. The roots are about 1.5" thick and the small stump is only around 3". I'm not sure if scanned images will work or not but I'll try to post a pic soon.

Thanks again

Re: Newbie's Finds

I don't mean to be a know it all. But the size of root you describe, usually shouldn't give you a false signal. And if it's giving you the Bell tone. Then I would say keep after it until you see what it is. You might put your detector in all metal, and starting outside of the signal. Slowly slide your coil over it, and from where the signal starts to where it ends. If you have an 8 in. coil and the signals width is 16 in., then it is something large and not a coin. HH

Re: Newbie's Finds

rvbvetter thanks again. I'll be going back hopfully tomarrow to further check it out. I'll keep you posted about what i find. By the way, it wasn't ringing a bell tone. in coin mode it was comming up as a nickle / gold sooooooo I'm really hoping that I find what ever is possibly down there.
Thanks

Re: Newbie's Finds

Where there's a will there's a way...getting permission and root's are the biggest pain in the ^$$,Keep us posted when you dig it up,curios...HH!!

Re: Newbie's Finds

If the tree is gone and it is on your property then why not just cut a portion of the root out? I've had to do that on occasion but I always got permission first before I cut the root. Good luck.

Re: Newbie's Finds

Well i went back to further dig into the situation but still no luck. however, when i did cut part of the root out and got a nice pile of dirt on the side i swung my MD over the hole and the pile the there was no signal comming from either??? has this happened to any of you before? I adjusted the MD a couple of times but with no luck. maybe a couple of the people who saw me digging the second time around went over after i had left and found something. sorry for the anticlimactic ending but this was interesting for the first month of detecting.
thank you all for the advice you have given me and i will post pics of what i have found as soon as soon as i can use the collage's scanner.
