I'm no expert but I would not put it to a bench grinder 
Maybe a brass wire brush (by hand) if you really want to clean it like that. I would not and I believe most here would agree. I just found a earlier version of this button (civil war) and I just scrubed it with a stiff toothbrush. There is much info on cleaning finds on this site...

Try some aluminum jelly. Apply with a Q tip and gently clean with a soft bristle brush. A little plain chapstick rubbed on will keep it shiny.
