Your spoon was made by Reed & Barton in Taunton Ma.

The pattern could be ID'd precisely if you wanted to do a little research. The pattern almost certainly dates from very near the year inscribed on the spoon.

The custom of giving a Christening Spoon as a gift was common at that time, so Katherine may have received such a gift before her first birthday. (although silver spoons for birthdays and Christmas were not unusual gifts for children either).

Nice piece of silver... very chunky.

Date marks were only used on hollow ware (silver bowls, cups, plates, etc).

Not on flatware (spoons, forks, etc).

The bird mark on the spoon is part of Reed and Barton's trademark, and shows up on everything, regardless of date.

I saw somewhere they've been around sense 1840.Any info?

If you count Charles Barton's time as a pewtersmith, they go back to 1830.

I am very well versed in older US silversmiths (coin silver particularly).

Very nice piece of silver, WT. Nice ID and info too, OWK.

Thanks for sharing...

That's a fantastic find. And I too agree that finding something with a name and especially with a date to go along with it makes is a much more special piece. Well done!
