nice point/crappy shale material

Got this one from an ex soybean field, now housing complex in Northern Virginia...made from some realy super soft clay like gray shale..forgive me, but I am partial to the stuff made from local non typical materials. Must have been a one time use mentality for this one

Yep.

In my experience, (at least in central Pennsylvania) there were riverine cultures and backwater/upland cultures that ran in parallel during much of the archaic era. Their points and tools differed in design and, when there was no chert available along the rivers and islands, in material as well. Indurated shale, shale-slate, argellite and such is what they used since that kind of stuff is what they had. Only occasionally do you find those materials very far from the rivers ; when you do, it's stuff from one of a few cultures like the Piedmont Archaic.
