I have done about 10 boxes in past 2 weeks and wondered what people who have been doing them for a long time have to say about average war nickel finds. Up until last night I had been finding an average of 3-5 per box. I looked through 2 boxes last night and was skunked. In reading some posts, it seems like my average of 3-5 per box may have been a fluke.

What is a normal average for people who CRH nickels? Also - I was holding out all 1940s for a while as I thought, old is always good, but in looking at actual value of anything but a war nickel, I found there is not much demand for them and lots of 20-40 never sell on eBay. Is it a good idea to keep taking these old 40s and 38, 39s out? As of now, I have just been going through the backs and looking for the mint mark above the dome and not even looking at dates.

I've been doing nickels for a very long time, enough to get over $20 face in war nickels. I say a good average is about 1 a box. As for other pre-60's, I keep anything, besides late 50's, in AU condition, any with 10 million or less + 1942 D (about 12 million made). Be on the lookout for any 38's or 39's with mint marks, and 1950D. You can keep 39P's if you want, but most I find are too worn to be worth keeping. Hope this helps

I average 2 per bag or 1 every 2,000 coins - .05%
Its a very steady average, all time high is 5 and only skunked once.
I too save all pre-1960's.
