Seems to be a theme for me lately but it was better finding one "NO CASH VALUE" token than the 21 memorial cents I also found today. Along with 6 dimes, 5 quarters, one nickel (thanks to Lowbatts insisting it was a nickel when I thought it would have been can slaw or a pull tab) and two wheaties. I had been ignoring those numbers all day.

We worked one of our local park woods and right away Tim got a V-nickel so I thought it would turn out to be a productive day. Checked out some areas not usually accessible when it's overgrown or flooded but this year I didn't get any oldies there. Well, I did find a very old coffee pot that was 8 inches down to the top of it. That was fun pulling out. When I dumped it out, inside it was the top of a can, two bottle caps, and a nail. I suppose it could have been someone's sick prank but I could think of better things to do. Maybe some kids buried it back before there was texting, Xbox, and Cable TV.

Saw a hobo camp complete with luggage, clothing, a pillow with a zebra pillow case on it and tons of beverage containers strewn here and there. From the looks of it the person probably got evicted from the woods. There was also a permanently sleeping raccoon nearby. Maybe he opened one of the bottles and downed the contents too quickly.

Have you guys noticed signs of spring in the air in the woods you've been to lately? Or maybe the condom wrappers are last years refuse. Somehow it's just not the same as finding a 3 Merry Widows condom tin. At least there's a certain nostalgia to those. I wonder how the moms and dads hiking through the woods with their kids feel about it. I'm not a prude by any means but I wish they wouldn't leave the stuff laying around the trees. I have to dig there!

Anyways we spent numerous hours here and there, broke for lunch, then hit another couple places and scoped out several others. The third place we hit was the perfect ground for some real oldies but either someone else beat us to it or the shiny stuff just didn't want to see the light of day. I think the feng shui of our coils was affected by global climate changes and actually generated a negative ion silver repulsion charge.

I managed to get some interesting jewelry. The old brooch/pin has gold plating around the frame which holds the stones. The newer ring looks to be plated brass or copper - inside it is stamped 16 - maybe a sweet 16 ring? It's not a size 16 because the opening is only about 5/8". One girl scout pin missing the backing. Numerous light bulb bases, washers, and the typical assortment of lag bolts and hex head screws that sound just like the perfect target.

As usual it was fun getting out with Tim although now that he's made it into my age bracket, he's getting all the attention from the senior citizen counter lady at Wendy's >:(

That ring shined mightily indeed, but felt light to be sure. The brooch rocks, since it came from the same area where I got my diamond brooch years ago, I have some faith. Good thing it didn't ring up like a nickel....

Now as to my birthday present, the ideal one for me and all my eccentricities was the watch face you got way down deep in that dirt. Haven't pulled one yet myself this year so having someone do it for me was a great thing on my big 5-0.

It makes something like the 12 or 15 thousandth one I've gotten over the years. Lost count after 1251....

Yep, highlight of the day,
"DUDE! You dug up a frog!"

Lowlight,
The calico sacrifice. If I did have one birthday wish, it would be to send whoever did that to meet God.

Do you still have the mem magnet on Mayo? Your huntin and you'll find'em

A goodly assortment of a lot of years gone by. . .

I'm always hoping for a "pre-1964" hobo site. . . the last one was post '65 with
about 7-bucks in clad near a rotted-out sleeping bag :P

Great day of diggin!!! :headbang:

as I told lowbatts -- I would report that "animal cruelity" act --- to kill a animal and have sex afterwards--shows a really twisted mind set -- possbile future serial killers at work ***-- they need to be stopped now --before they move up the food chain -- I would alert the local cops and animal welfare folks. -- there must be at least two of em --as a "team" freaks like this are more dangerous .

Interesting group, Mayo!!!

A wierd looking baby spoon, too. I wonder if a wierd looking baby was using it. Too bad the ring was phony, but at least it gave you a thrill when you first saw it, unlike the dreaded hardware and light bulb ends... :-\

Had multiple sites along/near the train tracks in Elgin Mark. I remember them trying to beat us with sticks and tossing rocks at us when we were kids, so we'd go back there and trash and burn the place when they were downtown panhandling. The sardine cans under the rocks were plainly evident to the trained eye. Money well spent at the time on movies and at the local trick shop if I remember right.

Mayo,

I always delight in reading your in-depth and lengthy posts. Tim's too. I only hope others feel the same way about mine sometimes. There's only so much one can usually say about finding a Rosey and two wheaties but I try to incorporate the Lowbatts/Mayo theme- colorful anecdotes and muse. Someday I'll be as good as you.

Nice finds, btw...

Joe

Hope those diamonds turn out to be real, that's a nice old site!
