Any ideas? Like the thread title says, found near the barn at an 1840 homesite at 4 to 5 inches deep.

A door latch you lift to go in then it drops to lock door had one like it in our barn, ours was more modern but same concept, like the Old saying goes if it aint broke dont fix it. I have also seen on gate there is a part that the notched part goes over and drops on to latch shut.Normally the gate or door is spring loaded to automatically shut behind and then it would latch on it's own.

My first thought was an old double barrel shotgun barrel release lever.

Something like this:

But then again, it could just be a latch :)
