I've seen the sky glow during solar flares a couple times now in my life. I was further south and the northern horizon just had a green glow to it both times. The one time I was traveling eastbound along I80 in nowhere Nevada far from any light pollution. I may not of even noticed it had I not had a CB radio in the vehicle at that time. The radio just perked up with some drivers chattering about the glow in the northern sky. They all seem to agree that it was caused by the thing called that whatchamacallit aurora borealis.
