Hello to all,
This is my first post but I've been reading through all the past and new postings for quite awhile now, all I can say is wow what a great site.
I'm new to MDing and this site is a find in itself.

My wife and I bought a home in Norvent, PA (Mount Pleasant / Westmoreland County) this past October
I've been doing a little looking on the web for history on this area (what better place to look than your own back yard, right)

Does anyone know anything about this area.

I've found that it was first called the Westmoreland Homesteads and was built as a Subsistence-Homestead Community (1930s).

I've found a lot of good local info and land maps on the web but was wondering if anyone has any info, stories, or places to hunt in this area,
also what are some other places to look for local info other than the web?

One more question what is known of the "gost town" called Crumb in bedford, PA

Thanks in advance to all, for your time.

P.S. Jeff,
I read your post on the Civil war encampment in Somerset PA, I'll be have'n a look come spring. Thanks

Howdy beanpickero,

Welcome...not to far from here (Pittsburgh), bout an hour maybe. My ex was from there but that was so many years ago and I dont remember the area that well. Check your local libraries or historical societies...that will give you plenty to start. Carnegie library here has a Pennsylvania Room that's huge, full with newspapers (on microfilm)and diaries and darn near anything you'd want to know about Pa. in it. Maybe take a day when its crappy and go there.

Hi Jeff.

There are so many places to detect in your area! There are Forts, Blockhouses, Campsites from 1750's to war of 1812, Indian wars, Log cabins from late 1700's to early 1800's, Stone Houses, Colonial Churches, ect. Get the picture! I live in Harrison city not too far from you. Like 30 minutes. Boarders book store or the other ones have many books there that will assist you in your travels. I hope this helps you. You can check out the Time Searchers videos on you tube and see the finds we are finding.

Welcome to the forum! I am in Bridgeville, again, not too far from you. The best place to do some research is the library or county courthouse. And if you ever need some guys to hunt a property with you, let us know.

Welcome beanpickero

It looks Like our members have already Jumped in here
with some Intresting Info.

Also check South of Loysburg in Bedford County.
There is said to be Union Entrenchments from the Civil war

built 1863
that are still Visable.

west of schellsburgh was Shawnee cabins camp used by Gen Forbes in 1758.

before that there was an indian camp there

Also, there were encampments during the Whiskey Rebellion, some in
Somerset Co. I have a camp up there , over the mountain from Seven
Springs Resort, quite a few covered bridges in the area.

My grandparents lived in Norvelt when I was a kid. The only thing I remember about it is that it was supposedly name after EleaNOR RooseVELT. That won't help you much but it brought back memories for me.
