Nose Thingy?

I found this while out last weekend. It looks as if it fits in an animal's nose to keep it from doing something. Any ideas?

Yep, it's a calf weaner...got several around here that looks like the first picture.

As far as the one Gypsyheart posted, never seen one like that...no wonder there was "mad cow" or mad whatever it was use on.
