Sorry for the hiatus folks. Sometimes life gets in the way lol. But this past Saturday was an interesting dig. With an absolute beauty of an ink. I also recovered a nice little pontiled phial. And and an absolute heart breaker of utility bottle. The utility is a reconstruction and still displays nicely. You just can't win them all. Thanks for looking - Justin

Absolutely fantastic ink! So let me ask you, how many hours worth of digging does this represent? And are you commonly hitting shards of glass, or is it more sparse. Reason I ask is I've got a really old dump about the same age as some stuff you're getting but I haven't found anything whole in probably around 6 hrs of combined digging, but the shards are fantastic. It's a frustrating dump to dig

Thanks I'm pretty psyched about the ink.This is a result of about 5 hours of digging. And I am getting alot of shards about four feet deep in a pretty thin wood ash layer. But it's a constant fight with tree roots and rocks. What kind of spot are you digging? River bank or farm dump and is there ash present? I guarantee there's something whole in your spot it's frustrating but you have to keep digging.

Thanks for the info! And yeah this dump is hard to figure out. It's on a river bank and it was kind of a dump over a stonewall. It also continues behind the stonewall. The age is early to mid 1800s, I've gotten shards of pontiled medicines, black glass, a success to the railroad flask etc. There isn't really any ash noticeable. It goes down quite deep, with a loose layer on the first 2ft with some occasional shells and occasional small shards, then deeper it gets harder compact, almost clay down around 3-4ft with more shells and broken china. Not many glass shards. But I'm thinking if I spend a day I may be rewarded.

Your spot sounds very promising . Are you collecting any of the shards by chance?

I think you're definitely right. I'll try to find a day on the calendar to spend some major time. I also want to sift too. I'll have to start a new thread with my pics.

you should try sifting that spot - with such early stuff (and it sounds like the deeper layer could be really early..if its shells and pottery..that could be colonial stuff)

Excellent bottles they don't come out of the ground much older than that here in New England. The real good dumps are harder to find these days so dig that one out well. That marble could turn out to be one of the better finds. Very collectible and could have been brought here from Europe. Swirls can indicate Germany but hopefully it was made here. It should have a pontil as well if you have not already checked. It could have been smoothed down but even so there should be some remains. Clip the roots and remove the rocks slowly. Good luck in the cold.
