Not a clue!

Found this today in a field that had a house dating to 1815. It's brass and before cleaning it I thought it was part of a musket trigger guard but I'm sure it's not. Any ideas ? Maybe horse related?

The square shaft is very much like that of a carriage bolt. Must have held the reins on a horse drawn plow? ;-)
