So in 3 weeks my church is having a coin drive where all members are encouraged to bring in their change to benefit our children's group. I was thinking about asking the person in charge if I could look through the change before they it into the bank and I will buy whatever I pick out at a fair price. I think last year they raised almost $2,000 most of it was change but some people gave bills.

Do you guys think this would be worth my time to look through this money?

If they are fine with you doing it, then why not? Who knows, you might get lucky and someone goes and donates a jar of coins that been sitting for 30 years.

Worth your time?? ? I highly doubt it, with that said, I guess it depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your CRH'ing. I spend 5+ hours ever week CRH'ing, and (yes I would consider what you are suggesting CRH'ing), point is, that very very rarely, hardly ever, is CRH'ing worth my time (based on how I personally value my time). I do it cause I enjoy it, not because it is worth it... If it was simply about "worth it" i would have quit a month after I started.

One more thing.... I would ask to go through it real quick, and then be more then happy to go through it.

good luck

I would say go for it. My school is doing a donation right now where you donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. I already am allowed to search 2 of the boxes (they are in every classroom). I talked with the organizer for the fundraiser last year and she said that she doesn't have time to supervise me if I were to search all of the coins. However, she gave me the coins that were foreign or wouldn't go through the machine. (Totals for American: 1918 wheat, 1912 wheat, and later gave me 1937 wheat {unsure if this came from the fundraiser and she forgot to give it to me, or if if came from her change}).

If they are ok with it, go for it. The more coins you see, the more likely you are to find something. We have a "mission jar" at Church that people put change in. When it gets too heavy for some people to lift, I take it home, go through it, roll it, take the rolls to the bank and bring them paper money, then the process starts all over again. I've never found silver in it, but I've found many wheat cents, foreign coins, and an Indian Head cent. You never know what will end up in there.

Your church is doing this as a fund raiser. To sort the coins for those of above face value is a good thing to do. Will you keep these coins by exchanging them out at face value or will you give them fair market value for found coins to be applied twards the fund raiser.

I see no fault in buying coins from people or the banks to increase our own personal wealth, but a coin donated to charity? I find it a moral issue this is money donated to raise money for a "cause" and money in vace value or metal value donated to said cause should be given to them.

Myself I would keep the metal values and give the church current melt value @ www.coinflation.com for anything found. Its for a good cause right?

If the church is OK with it go for it!

Next year you run the drive.

Heck yea go through 'em! why not might find some coins that have been sittin' around for awhile. Donate a few bucks in return!

Yeah, if I do this I plan paying full price for any coins that I take out.
