Lots of different types
But never seen one with an end as this one has.
Log Dog would be my guess

I've dug a few of those and never have found out what they are . mine were found in an area which saw action during the civil war and logging in the 1920s. I goggled the guesses above and don't find a match. hardy tools seems the closest . the bevel makes me think some kind of wedge style keeper ? the item has been on t-net a few time before that I've seen so not all that uncommon.

the problem I have with a hardy tool is the taper , once hammered on, it would be hard to remove from the anvil . google images of hardy tools and you don't see that taper like the relic has.

the problem I have with a hardy tool is the taper , once hammered on, it would be hard to remove from the anvil . google images of hardy tools and you don't see that taper like the relic has.

I'm guessing that some were tapered and some weren't?

I thought those you're showing were called stake or stump anvils . the pic center bottom row looks like the relic posted.

Depends on the anvil, Ours (vintage) was for blacksmithing and horse shoes. the holes in the anvil was both with a taper and and the hole on toward the end it had strait walls when inserted the device stuck out threw the bottom and you had to reach under the anvil and give the selected cutter a tap to remove it.

Usually a couple of taps on the side and the Hardie will pull out.

Kinda sounds like it could be this based on the slotted grooves in the sides.
