"NS": Somebody doing little dumps in lots of banks around town?
This is really weird - I went on a mini trip just a little bit out of my area. I found at a couple of banks a small number of rolls of halves marked with a distinctive script "NS" (and I'm sure it doesn't stand for somebody's initials).
I've seen this same marking before at several other banks in the same metropolitan area. (This is California, where we don't have coin counter machines; we must re-roll.) It's like there is somebody who is checking for silver and dumping just a few rolls at a time at various branches of various banks. (Does this person really have accounts at all these banks? Or maybe convinces them to exchange for cash
)
Clearly that person is not a member of this community, for he/she would know better. I just can't figure out the logic behind it! Why dump small amounts in so many places? You want to have plenty of banks around you can check for coins and a *minimum* number of dump banks, where you are not likely to get coins deposited by others.
In any case, I picked them all up, and checked them just to make sure they were indeed N.S. (I was hoping this person didn't count 40% as silver!) And I'm removing them from local circulation by taking to my dump bank. Hopefully next time I go up to these banks, they will have some new coins without the NS mark!
(On the bright side - at least I got 4x40% from some loose halves. A ton of Ike's too for some reason.)
