Does this look like a nutting stone? Found in an area where a dozer had done some work, I assume thats when it got broken but I couldn't find the other half. Closest water source is a stream about a half mile away. No other stone of this type in the area.

Sorry about the double pictures. A friend asked me the other day what a nut stone was and I took these pics for him of a few I had. I explained they were rarer than all the morter and pestles I find in rock shelters. I showed a few hickory nuts to give him an idea of how it all worked, Nut stones are usually worked on both sides into cup like depressions. The previous poster on possible fossils may be correct as well. Not that stone age man did not use them as well.

Happy hunting guys !
