Odd aerial image

While mapping pipelines I came across this odd image. Looks like a cloud over open water which is not that unusual . Its just that this was the only water in that area that had the image. Just curious if anyone has a explaination on this.

That would be my guess also, a reflection.

i dont know if you have them in texas, but in south eastern oregon

we have alkaline lakes. when the wind is strong they look like lakes

of thick gray mud with waves.

Alkali Lake is located in Lake County, Oregon, 345 km southeast of Portland, Oregon, just west of US Hwy 395, and about 100 miles from California boarder. Most of it is dry, which this stretch of US 395 crosses in almost a causeway-like fashion. There is some small quantity of water remaining on the southwest side, subject to rainfall, as there appears to be no feeder source for the lake otherwise. This area includes: Alkali Lake Dunes, Horror Spring & Hutton Spring.

Alkali Dunes are along Alkali Lake and Hutton Spring, on the northwest margin of Alkali Lake, is the sole habitat of the Hutton tui chub, classified as a threatened subspecies by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

On the southwestern margin of Alkali Lake is a pretty messy chemical waste disposal site. About 25,000 drums of pesticide manufacturing waste were disposed of here in the late 1960s and 1970s. In 1976, the drums were crushed and buried in place in shallow trenches and fenced. Current analysis concludes that the site does not present a significant risk to the public or the environment.

I'm guessing fog or steam. Was the picture taken in the fall? Warm water and cool ground temps will cause this.

yep, you can see the wind direction

Looks to me like the trees at lower left are creating a wind shadow (dark, smooth water). The rest is roughed up by the wind and reflecting light.

Found another one with ' smoke on the water' . Just 2 ponds had the settling fog . Thought it was interesting. Heres a pic with two ponds . One with and one without.

I guess you realise that the aerial shots are made up of a patchwork of images which can vary over many months or years.

This is just reflection from a complex surface. Probably indirect light (cloudy). Reflection on still water would be white. Still water would be black, or show the bottom. With wind, you get all kinds of reflection. There is also some surface haze all over the image.

Sorry, I misunderstood. You are of course correct.

If water does not reflect, it looks black.

If it reflects, it is white-ish.

If the reflection is below the surface, it is blue or green (scattered light).

Normally you see all three happening.

yeah! it looks like wind blown water to me.

Me too. Anytime you have wind building you get small ripples before the waves can build up. We call them "cats feet" in the sailing community. Looking don on them it's just disturbed water. In the original shot you can even see the 'wind shadow" near the left side where the shore is deflecting the wind.
