I invited my friends smittyman and CarolinaTom up for a hunt today. It was hot but not ungodly hot as it's been lately in the afternoons. We hit two places and at the second is where I found this coin.
The third place was just a small mowed parcel in the mill village. We hunted for a good while and about the time we were going to go somewhere else Smittyman asked Tom and I to check a target and see what we think. When I checked it I though to myself I wish I had put my coil over it. It was soft, deep, repeatable, and in the quarter TID range. The "soil" was a combination of Carolina red clay and gravel so very tough to dig. But after a few minutes out popped an 1896 Barber quarter. A bit thin and worn but it put Smittyman in the 1800s club. Aside from that little gem Tom and I basically got out butts whooped today. But tomorrow is another day.
