Does anyone know what the original function of this tool was intended for? Clearly it's an ax head of some type, but I've never seen one this compact. And the smooth rounded-off cutting end has thrown me for a loop too. I'm wondering if it's supposed to be rounded off-- I can't possibly imagine a wood splitter ever getting this dull without the original owner at least attempting to put a slightly sharper edge on it at some point. It's definitely well used and is very wide & very heavy for only being 7.5 inches long

Not an axe head but a hammer/sledge of sorts. Maybe railroad but it looks too stout for that. where was it found?

Flea market in NW Arkansas. Frisco railway started here in 1850 so that makes sense. In fact, our town (Rogers) was named after Frisco capitan CW Rogers.

What would they strike with the business end of that thing on a railway?

If it is rail road(not sure just kinda gave me that vibe) Rail spikes, or what ever else needs smashing.

12 pound, straight peen hammers were commonly a part of most blacksmiths' array of tools.
