I just started using a metal detector. This is the first thing I found that was'nt a nail or pull tab. Any ideas on what it could be? It's larger than a quarter and smaller than a half dollar. It has a number 4 on the back. My wife thinks it is an old button.

The object you found is a special form of lead weight made for use in dress-hems, coat-tails, and curtains. It is sewn inside the cloth to keep the garment or curtain's lower hem down toward the ground. In short, it is called a hem-weight. The circular version you found has been in use ever since the early-1800s (at least), and is still in use today.

Thanks for the info, I found it in my front yard about 8" deep. The house was built in 1905.
