Old Civil War buckle?????

I! I found this close to a Civil War Battlefield and was wondering if it was some kind of buckle. It looks as if it had a place for hooks on the back. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You!

Doesn't look like any buckle I am familiar with, but it does look like the lid to something, maybe a square powder compact.

It looks like half of a vintage cigarette case to me.
