Old coins??? What timeframe did people start putting....

Probably many reasons. Coins strung on a cord around you neck are hard to lose. Some could have been used as buttons, or as ornaments on personal items. Since we see so many holed coins being found, there has to be lots of reasons that someone would poke a hole in them. If people have stopped putting holes in them it is probably because we have devalued current coinage so much.

I've found two half reales that were holed, a 1773 and a 1784. I also found an 1807 Turkish coin that had been holed. That's all the holed coins I've found.

Based on the YouTube metal detecting videos I've watched, the late 1800's seems to be when the practice stopped. Lots of seated dimes come out of the ground holed, but I don't think I've seen too many (if any) Barber dimes that were holed. Just my take on it...
