Prospecting
Was out today for a quick hunt with my Garrett Groundhog and found this in a wash.
Under some sand, behind a boulder, rock.
I can read silver plate on the back, and before that the start of a word that looks like an OX.
But after a little cleaning it looks like brass or copper base metal. Searching Google for an image or name.
Any ideas anyone.

The wood box its sitting on measures 10.5 X 6 inches.

i bet mrs guzman is still mad her boys dropped that digging for worms.

looks like it was real hot...foundations in the area?
did you go look at that packard yet?

Foundations about 50 yards away. If you can call a couple rocks foundations. But, the outline of them is there still. This was at the bottom of a small embankment going down to the wash. At the bottom.
My wife and I just waved at mrs guzman the other day. She lives down the street from us. Unless you are referring to her mother.
Will tomorrow. The packard.

Ahhhhhhhh! Now THERE'S a man after my heart! I started with a Garrett Groundhog! 37 years ago! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Groundhog!

And, ya know what? I not only still have it, but it STILL works! It gets deeper than modern detectors when one learns how to listen to what it's telling you.

Very nice spoon!

Thanks, picked up the Garrett in almost mint condition for $10 at a yard sale.
It was missing the Bat cover, and tray. So the person sold it to me because he could not test it.
Called Garrett, sent me a new tray and cover for free.
Works perfect. Downloaded the manual, and then copied all the tricks from posts in this forum to a folder I carry with me.
Now a days most MDs are going around the 15khz frequency now that Garrett had for years.
I also bought the 10.5 coil from broken metal detectors. The guy in Texas.

Yeah, I know it was the audible frequency that made it for me. Back then, all the other detectors had this eery, sick sound that hurt my ears and got on my nerves. The Groundhog was a very mellow sound. Worked for me!

Here's a tip for you. I used the 10.5 coil all the time. I usually just dug everything but when I wanted to discriminate, I'd hunt in VLF so I could ground balance. When I got a good deep signal. I'd pinpoint, then, I'd keep the coil at the same level and just off to the side of the target. I'd then switch over to T/R, where I'd have the discrimination set to just below nickel. If you can keep the coil at the same level, the target will sound louder in T/R if it's a coin.

Just a neat little trick when one wants to discriminate but keep the benefits of the VLF side.

Thanks. I will write that down on the page in my folder.
