In looking at the old Sanborn maps of the Fairgrounds in 1901 and 1926 I found the Dining Hall & Outhouses.
Dirt has been moved, it had been the school football field, and now it is our Community Park with soccer fields, little league fields, a playground, and some open space.
Over the last couple of years I have pulled many oldies out of the parts of the park that are off beaten track. But the last few hunts have been less than stellar. So, I decided to rethink my approach again.
In going back to the old sanborn maps I had not only found the dining hall and restroom area, but on the other end of the park I found the Loeb Farm Building. Some of you may remember Loeb and Leopold as the young men that committed a murder to see if they could get away with it. This was the building donated by the family farm and creamery of one of them.
I plan to work that area (now an open field) pretty hard for anything that still has the family name on it.
In hitting the area near the old dining hall I found that there is a ton of trash and old nails in the ground. In a couple of evenings I have come up with 2 indians -1906 & 1887, 2 Buffs - 1920 & undated, 1 1948 Jefferson nickel, and a 1936 Merc.
(also a bunch of clad)
The 1906 Indian was less than 2 inches down! I almost left it as a modern penny, but .....
Thanks for looking!
Good Luck,
Mark
