"Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Went detecting yesterday with a buddy who had permission to detect an old yard.
I normally perfer to use a Fisher CZ6 when hunting grassy areas, but because of my "Detector Elbow", I was forced to use the old Garrett Freedom II with 7" coil that I've had since 1986. In just a couple of hours I found about 15-20 Wheat cents, all from the 1940's, a silver Roosevelt dime, and one 1897 IH cent.
The picture shows exactly where the coin was in the plug. (approx. 5" deep). Gave a very good solid signal.
Not too bad for a 20 year old detector.

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

I told you over the phone to give it a title like: Indian head found right on top! Marketing is the key to views and replies! ;) Good example is: burial death mask! ;D

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Wow, nice find. How do you cut your plug so nice. Is your trowel flat? I got mine from Whites, it's rounded with the "saw" on the side. I am getting better making round ones.

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Thats a nice plug, and a nice Indian. Wish our soil in west texas could be cut into a plug...all it does is crumble, blow away, and leave me with a hole!

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Welcome Newbies.....good to see ya posting!
Congrats on a great find man.........nice plug too!! Purdy grass ;D ;D

Happy Hunting,

BK, Nice Finds, I Still Use A Fisher 1266X With a Hot Head Coil As My Back Up Machine, For Relic Hunting, It Is 12 Yrs Old, But What Ever Works. Best Of Luck & Good Hunting. trk5capt...

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Thanks for the replies!
Most, (but not all) the soil around here kinda sandy. It's firm enough to hold together though and it also drains well, which, I think allows the coins to come out of the ground in pretty good condition. When the plug is put back, Its very difficult to see where it was. The down side is that it dries out quickly.

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Excellent presentation BK - goes to show those old machines are still work horses.
Long live the Freedom II ---- fellow zvth member :-)

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

It looks like you didn't have to get cher' diggin' finger very dirty with that one......

Maybe next time it'll just run up your leg and jump in the ol' coin pouch. 8)

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Nice coin and nice hole too.

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

HEY BK NICE INDIAN. LOOKS LIKE THE GRASS IS GREEN, THATS A PLUS. I MISS THAT TYPE OF SOIL. MOSTLY SAND AND CLAY HERE. WELL GOOD LUCK AND HH MARK

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Wow, I'm jealous, BK....with soil like that it looks like you should be able to just put your hand in the ground....and pull that puppy out...no digging required. ;) ;D

Thanks for the pictures...I like to see where everyone is digging.

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Really nice find! And those old machines still know how to pick up the good stuff! ;)

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

Re: "Old Faithful" proves itself again.

SUPER cool post bk! I love it when pictures of digs are posted. 8) Thanks also for the accurate depth info.

And too, your post says much about metal detectors. My old 1982 Wilson Newman GBIII in all-metal mode could detect an Indian cent at 9 inches deep (landfill area). In fact I now own a super cheap Chinese detector that can detect a silver quarter 10-12 inches deep in full discrimination mode. I paid a measly $60 for it off ebay. Today owners of machines costing over a thousand dollars brag when their machine do this.

My very best producing machine only gets about 6 inches on an Indian cent. I'm re-hunting my old sites and killing with it. Since it pinpoints perfectly I'm plugging coins over 100 years old at 2 1/2 to 5 inches deep. With my old machine I thought these coins were 8 inches deep LOL ;D Ya, I dug some mighty powerful holes!

Just because a detector is the latest and deepest doesn't always mean it's the best for CONSISTANTLY locating the goodies. Wish I had learned this years ago. I would have saved a lot of money and would have far more goodies by now. In the past I was always thinking depth only. Bad move.

Give em more bells and whistles and take their money ;D
