So I was hooked on metal detecting since the day I started, but my luck for finding anything good hasn't been great. I have been hitting a lot of state lands with old home sites only to find that someone else had recently been there. I thought I was being smart about it by doing research and such, but I guess there is someone else out there doing the same thing! Anyway, since my start, I have found over $6 in clad, a few matchbox cars, and some old farm relics. Today I found the cool old WMA sign from 1969 and the axe head with the root growing through it. I recently got in contact with another forum member and we are going to go hunt together. Heres hoping my luck changes! HH!

That sign is in good shape! I like that the animals & birds are speeding away from the public hunting grounds! Interesting ax & root combo also. I've found two ax heads, one a usable big wood-splitting ax head that I found on the surface next to a decaying log cabin on land we rented in rural NM. I hauled that ax head to CA but what use is it now in city apartment? lol But I don't want to give it up! The other I dug here last fall with aid of detector -- it's an old roofer's ax-hammer combo, pretty cool and one of my favorite finds. Also found a circular saw blade embeded in a tree trunk pretty high up, odd location. Glad you're enjoying your detecting, and you'll be getting stunning finds soon, probably where you least expect them. HH Andi

Cool finds. :)
I'm actually heading out to a old barn, (middle of no where) on a river to see what I can find. When you hit those bigger pieces how did the detector react? I found that my detector goes crazy when an object is spread out over a wide distance.

Keep at! The good old stuff you are looking for will come in time.

I too haven't made the first big hit, but I always get a kick out of the odd things I pull from the ground. One of these days I'm sure both of us will have luck. It's fun to do the research and I've learned a lot when it comes to the local history around me including these early 1800's foundations in State Land. Keep the faith.
