I went for a short hunt to a spot i hit hard before. Very little finds today but did pull out this a lid and base that fit together so I'm positive it was together once. A friend said he thought it was a ink well top but I'm not so sure because of the hole but i could be wrong. Anyone have any ideas what exactly it is?

I'd say the hole is where the pen would set. Nice find.

Nice find.

I'd say though, that it is far more likely to be a jam pot lid (or a mustard pot lid), than an ink well top.

I think it was considered bad to leave the ink open to evaporation, and to leave the quill to soften in the ink.

If you do search on "hinged mustard pot" you will see some similar pieces by scrolling down.

If it's big enough, it could be a lid to a sugar bowl or salt cellar. The hole would be for the spoon.

Thanks guys. That's why i didn't think it was a inkwell because of the hole that some sort of utensil would stick out of. The hole reminded me of a sugar thing my mom had years ago that had the same type of slit for a spoon. I would have never thought to check about a mustard or jam lid. Ill look up some shortly and see! [emoji2]
