Old military button

I found an old button (I assume it's a button). I can't make out everything on it, it's flat and thin. Size is slightly larger than a penny but smaller than a nickel. Any help, information or direction would be greatly appreciated. My internet searches have only taught me that I have no idea what I'm looking at.
