I found a large solid timber washed up on the beach in the Gulf Of Mexico not too long ago, it was around 18 feet long looked to be flat on one side but had some chunks taken out of it. It was very heavy and very difficult to move, and was filled with these nails/spikes some were curved or bent some were straight. They all had round heads and square shafts and were corroded. I have been trying to figure out if these came off a ship or possibly an old building or pier or something like that. One of the nails/spikes was very loose so I pulled it out of the wood and brought it home, unfortunately the timber was washed back into the ocean so I can't take any pictures of it but here are some pictures of the nail/spike I brought back it's about 5 inches long. What do you think?

can you tell us what beach you found it on?
Once you tell us, we can then back track to wrecks in that area
I live on the gulf

It was found around the Cape San Blas area, I have done a little bit of research around my area and have not found that much. I do know that the Spanish and French had fort's around this area in the early 1700s. The British also used to transport supplies via ships through my area and up the Apalachicola river to fort Gadsden.

What would be the best way to clean it? I have used white vinegar before to dissolve rust and that worked pretty well.

I would put it in my electrolysis tank......but I also use ACV baths which I tend to not have the waiting patience for.
