Old or Modern Button?

First post, hopefully in right spot. Found this button today by old Boy Scout Camp on Vancouver Island, BC.
Any Ideas?

A little more info. It's non magnetic and very fragile. While trying to clean it more some pieces are flaking off. It is like very poorly cast metal.

The material is pewter the button is an old one. I'm still looking into the M

Late 18th, Early 19th century pewter. The “M” has got me, though.
