old rail crossing

So i had a few hours to detect today... I went out to some local playgrounds and found the usual clad... no rings.. was waiting for the grass to dry before i ventured out for coins....

I decided to hunt an area i knew of but hadnt yet hunted... it is an old rail crossing.. the picture here is of the new bridge ( 1906 ) the original crossing was built in 1884..

i found this whatcamicall it and this button...

there was so much trash... literally a pull tab every 4 inches... i was hunting the area under this crossing along a foot path..

im guessing by the caps and tabs its frequented by beer drinkers.

the fact that there are so many tabs and other trash items lends me to think it has not been hunted in awhile.. i am sure there are many good targets hidden under all that trash.

I also found alot of foundary metal i am guessing.. large clumps of melted pot metal type substance may be lead... its soaking now...

any local hunters want to help me clear the trash let me know.

Maybe you can clear small areas at a time. Then you can get an idea of what kind of treasures are hidden between the trash targets.

I found a button kind of like yours about 100 or so miles north of you. Mine is standard issue, probably 1940ish, which makes sense because apparently the army was guarding all major supply and transportation routes, such as the railroad bridges. I found mine under a plum tree about 75 yards from a trestle.

Yours looks older, but I know little about these things. Someone here will be able to date it.

Nice button. I bet there's good stuff there. The other item is a valve stem cap from an old car tire...1920s. It's flattened. I just found one this week too.

You can find all kinds of things around Railroad bridges. Even in peace time if there was a strike on that railroad there would have been security of some kind placed there. The Railroads hire off duty police or contract out security companies. In modern times the government won't allow Railroads to strike because it falls under national security.

Great Stuff! I like finding old army buttons better than finding coins! Im an Army vet and kinda feel the long green line every time I find an old button. I have posted a few of the more common variations of the 20th Century eagle button that you will find. And also a few collar insignia. Again, good stuff and keep on that old RR bridge.
