I was desperate to find something old and I found this so I was actually happy. Is it just an old shelf clip?

Possibly a latch bolt from an old door lock. I can't find an exact match, but below is close. A spring on the "rod" postion closes it to catch the door closed.

Thank you Charlie. That would explain the shape of the tip. That means there was a building there which means more to follow.
