Old SKY KING RING, Merc', Girl Scout Pin, Silver Medals & More......

I recently got permission to hunt the grounds of an old Catholic school house I actually attended in the 1st grade in 1968-69; the last year it was in operation after many years. My Dad actually went there in grade school as well.

The guy in charge is also into detecting and said he's already "hunted out" the site with his Tesoro Cortes. He told me there's "no silver" to be had. He even snickered a little. But, I told him I didn't mind and would take my chances. I already dug one War/OD Nickel on the first hunt so in my book that's silver.

So anyway, the first very brief hunt was interrupted by a sudden rain. I went back for two short hunts so far. As usual there was plenty of trash but I hit a small area maybe 15 x 20 feet that gave up some pretty cool targets. One of my favorites is an old Sky King ring.....

Yeah it's all bent to hell and kinda' rusty but I still like it. Right after that I dug an old Girl Scout Pin......

Then there was a tiny and very deep Sterling "Mother Mcauley" Medal and a genuine silver plate Miraculous medal made in Italy; also quite deep.......

Then there was a 1942 Mercury Dime, another '44 War Nickel, four more Wheaties, another old & busted junker ring, a piece from some kind of junk jewelry & part of an old lead seal of some sort......

I'm convinced this was an area where lots of kids played at one time based on the targets.

Overall I was a bit surprised. I found WAY more than I expected after talking to the guy. I haven't told him what I found yet but I plan on letting him know this weekend. I almost feel kinda' bad that I found all of this stuff that he missed.

Overall I think it's a sweet spot but I don't know what's left; if anything. We'll see. I also have a strong hunch my Omega just may be sniffing out some smaller, deep targets that he may have passed over.

I really like the Sky King ring . It's kinda' strange. A friend of mine who was the (excellent) drummer in my last band died suddenly about a year ago. The name of his previous band just happened to be "Sky King" after the TV show; which he watched as a little kid. It makes you wonder.....

That's about it for now.
Thanks for looking & HH......

Congrats for proving the sites not hunted out. :occasion14: You pulled a fist full of keepers G424

Nice! A blast from your past. How many people get to do that? I like the religious medals and the GS pin.

Great Finds

HH

The Sky King Ring is way cool.
Show "the guy in charge" the religious medals only.
No sense in rubbing it in. I think you answered the question. Today's machines can go a lot deeper than older equipment.
Congrats on some really nice detecting.

Congrats on your 42 Merc - 44 Nickel and other treasures - I watched the Sky King show on a black & white tv when I was just a youngster myself - anyway thanks for sharing your pictures and story with us and I wish you many more great finds while out dirt fishing.

Very well done G424. The treasure that someone else missed, is the sweetest treasure of all. Well played sir.

I have a hunch the "guy in charge" is going to be bummed...

I think he may be bummed too so I've been thinking that in the spirit of brotherhood and general civility, I'll play down the whole thing just a bit when asked.

I am glad that YOU said that.

You know how guys are... that poor dude thinks he did a good job, and you proved him wrong... that could make you the part of the problem!

It's a good problem for you to have, I wish that I was confronted with this conundrum more frequently!

Kool story that goes with the ring 8-)

Sweet finds! Congrsts!

Wise move to let the guy remain happy with what he found.

Nice finds! The Sky King ring really takes me back. I can remember seeing the TV show back in the late fifties! Man, I'm getting old!

That one was before my time. I was born in '61. But I've definitely heard of it.

I just think it's cool to find things that were so popular back then. From what I've read they made many varieties of those rings and millions of kids sent away for them. Some even had built in lights and telescopes. They're highly collectible but the ones that are all bent and rusty like mine aren't exactly in high demand.

Oh well; it goes in my collection regardless...

Good job. Congratulations, no place is ever hunted out. They just got a lot of trash out of the way. Good coins and cool stuff too! Keep hitting it.
