Hello Friends,
Part II of my "Where in the world is Brendan" update consists of finds made on a couple of hunts at an old summer camp site (circa 1900s-1960s) that I located waaaaay in the middle of nowhere. I just found the place last month -- going into it I had a rough idea of where it might be, but accessing it was quite the adventure the first time around, before I found a much easier way in. (Imagine me climbing a 50-foot sand bluff, with my detector in one hand, and my army shovel in the other! That's extreme, even for me.
)
The area itself, which is thickly wooded, is vast and bears almost no traces of the old camp. Colonial occupation there goes all the way back to the 1600s, and before that, it saw Native American use, so there's a chance to find a wide range of things. I spent much of my time on the first hunt just wandering trails and marking GPS points.
On my way back toward the car I hit a spot that looked "used" at some point in the past, and things heated up right away. My first target was a Merc at maybe just a half-inch down, so I immediately got excited, knowing this place is probably fairly untouched. Junk is minimal, so you can dig most targets, and in just a few serious hours of hunting, I found the following:
Like I said, the place is huge and I've barely begun. I think this spot has got some real potential. Will keep you posted.
Cheers and HH,
Brendan

My first target was a Merc at maybe just a half-inch down, so I immediately got excited, knowing this place is probably fairly untouched. Junk is minimal, so you can dig most targets, and in just a few serious hours of hunting, I found the following:
- 1936 Merc
- 1951 "S" Rosie
- Two War nickels: a 1944 "P" and a 1945 "D"
- Navy(?) Eagle button (ID anyone?) -- My guess is U.S. Navy, due to the Eagle w/ anchor, but am not sure of its age or authenticity.
- Two religious medals: a Madonna, and a St. Joseph (back is inscribed, "St. Joseph, Pray For Us."
- Enameled butterfly brooch/pin.
- Several interesting relics: a really nice old ornate brass doorknob; a couple of huge, crude old fishing weights; two tubes of vintage toothpaste (What can I say? I like the old junk.
); a piece of key that was probably for one of the camp buildings, as it had a number stamped on it; and of course, a gazillion bullets, casings, shotguns shells, etc. (not pictured).
Like I said, the place is huge and I've barely begun. I think this spot has got some real potential. Will keep you posted.
Cheers and HH,
