About 2 weeks ago my buddy was dismantling a house that was built circa 1820s or perhaps earlier. He had recruited some labor to haul off some scrap metal and material and remove some of the material from the walls. I showed up the next day and started metal detecting the property without much luck. So I started rummaging around under the house, in crawl spaces, behind walls, etc. I found a couple of bottles from the late 1880s in an attic crawl space. And 2 military hats in a closet shelf. One was a ww1 army officer hat and the other was a US Navy flat hat. I noticed a leather purse/billfold looking thing on the floor. I picked it up and looked inside and found a collection of property tax receipts dating from the late 1800s going forward. I then noticed some folded pieces of paper on the floor. I picked them up and started reading them. One of them was a land grant from the state of NC dated 1788. It was written and signed by THE FIRST MAN EVER TO BE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. He declined to serve. His name is Samuel Johnston. Read about him here Samuel Johnston - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Affixed to the document by means of a ribbon was a survey map of the
Property and a heavy parchment seal.
There was another document of an adjacent property dated 1829 that I haven't yet researched . My buddy has had these documents professionally mounted and framed and I will include some pics in a couple of days.
