One of yesterday's finds local history connection

Pemberton Borough, New Jersey, where I live, is a 3/4 square mile rural town with a lot of local history. Back in the early 1930s there were several small markets and stores throughout town. One of these was an American Stores Company store which was a retail chain of supermarkets and drugstores started in 1917. One of my finds yesterday in the nearby woods was an 8 sided jar. Turns out it was made specifically for the American Stores company chain by the Capstan Glass Company of Connellsville, Pennsylvania between 1919 and 1938. Pictured is a 1930s photo of the American Stores Company market on Hanover St. right here in Pemberton Borough and the jar which in all likelihood was sold there.

Cool jar and backstory! I love local, small town history...the little coffee shop I haunt occasionally has period pictures on the wall from when it was a hardware store in the 1800's...when they opened their coffee shop 17 or so years ago, they peeled back all the layers of paneling, drywall and wallpaper to expose the original beautiful red brick. Some of the things they found while remodeling are on display, that's why I love that atmosphere. Great post, thx for sharing, Ddf.

Nice story on your small town. I have never seen an eight sided jar and I'm an old coot that's seen a thing or two, (Farmers Insurance :grin. Not a chip on that jar either!
