Hi Folks went out on this rainy good friday with "Edot" and "Walk the dog" to hunt an old paper mill ruins dating back to the mid 1700s. Within the first half hour I received a nice deep signal on the AT/Pro. I pulled a US Buckle. Edot was working the creek with his AT and found the remains of an old 1907 Porcelain Penna registration plate. I also dug 6 memorial lincolns and two clad dimes out of the same hole. A short time after that I pulled what I think is another old colonial buckle. After returning home and checking the US buckle online, I am somewhat confused as to what US Buckle I have. I read that they can be regular, medium and baby US plates. Or they can be a box plate. Can one of you experts chime in and tell me what US Plate I dug. I provided pics with measurements with the hopes that you can help me. Thanks again !

No idea on the buckle ID but a awesome find. Congrats.

I am no expert in civil war buckles in any stretch of the imagination, but I believe you have a regulation US buckle. You can tell it's a buckle because of the arrow hooks on the back that would attach to the leather belt. ( box plates would have iron loops to attach to a cartridge box). I believe that is the standard size for a US buckle. (though I may be wrong). That is definitely a bucket list find and an amazing find in everyone's book.

Your other buckle is a shoe buckle and a very nice one. Prob 1720-1790

I'm not sure on size. Although I know the medium is the rarest one. The arrow hooks do prove it to be a belt buckle, rather than a box plate. And a pretty nice one, too! The earlier fat-letter buckles had round hooks, yours has arrows, so mid to late Civil war is your range. Great find by the way!!!

Congrats on the buckle, nice finds!
