I'm new to the site so I've just been lurking and reading posts but today I thought I'd add to this thread of oddities.

A little background - I received from my grandfathers a third of his odd collections of coins and what not's that were scattered all over the place - just a random couple of handfuls each.

Coins from all over the world from various travels and a few subway tokens for good measure. I'd like to know if the Chinese coins are worth anything, as I dig further into the pile I'll post a few more questions.

Welcome to Tnet! Some Chinese coins can be worth money. It will depend on year and denomination just like coins from other countries. They made their share of aluminum, brass, silver, gold, etc. coins. It will take some research to figure out each one. Some of the older coins don't have actual years on them. They then used the ruler and gave a general time frame. It's a matter of figuring out the symbols so you can translate them into a date and denomination.

Nice!!! Congrats!!! Now the fun of Research!!!

Welcome aboard fellow Mass resident! Lots of fun researching all those- Hope there's some valuable ones among them...

I've found 4 of the Chinese coins MDing. They are old but fairly common. Not worth much from the research I've done. Welcome to T-Net!

Chinese crowns can be worth a significant amount if they are real, but there are a ton of modern fakes out there even for very common coins. With out looking to deep into it I doubt any of these are real. The Kwangtung was the easiest too look up and it doesn't seem to match any of the real ones that my Krause lists. Still interesting finds though.

Thanks for sharing those. I remember the first Chines coin I dug with a square hole in it I thought I found an old myan or Roman coin lol Nice collection research can be fun to see what your coins are worth and to learn and catagorize them. Great post and welcome Tommy
