Opinions on SE

Very deep detecting and pulls out the targets from way down . Easier to use than the EXII and a bit lighter although this is not a real factor. Has a wide array of accessories. Can be considered "heavy" when compared to other detectors. Can be a bit difficult to pinpoint with using the DD coil. Some think it gives too much information but i like the information since it helps me decide better whether or nor to dig. It is the deepest detector I have used in my area. Underastanding it will take some patience and time but will be in the long run worth it.

It's a great detector. I'll hit on the 'bad' points first:

- I feel that the design is a little rough. I really enjoyed the weight and balance of my white's XLT.. this detector is definitely heavier and is not balanced well.
- The screen can be hard to see/read even with contrast adjustments
- VCO squeal on the pinpoint can rattle your ears.. better headphones with gain cutoff would probably help that (on my list of things to buy)
- Double D is weird.. but once you get use to it.. it's a snap to be right on.
- Sucks the power. My batteries on the XLT last twice as long.
- Slow response on target id (digital readout)
- Can be unstable around electrical sources or buildings with large amount of interference

Good points.. well they certainly out weigh all the bad

- It's goes extremely deep
- It's extremely sensitive
- Very accurate on target ID (tone id)
- Smart find is extremely when used in conjunction with tone id
- I particularily find it's awesome on nickels and bottle caps. Other detectors will often fool me. Right now, I'm really diggin' up the old nickels and avoiding the bottlecaps
- Excellent options that are easy to program.
- Nice to have the ability to have multiple discrimination patterns (standard disc, and iron mask) for different views.. eventhough I've been converted to all metal now.
- Noise cancel -- nice when detecting with others
- Multiple frequencies

So, I have issues with the SE.. but do I regret buying it? Absolutely not. Would I ever get rid of it.. absolutely not. By far the best detector I've used. If some how they would combine the comfort of my XLT with the power of the SE.. that would be the best detector on the planet for me. But the bottom line... finding stuff is where it's at. If I'm finding stuff.. I could care less about weight and balance.

I hope this helps.. and didn't add to the confusion.

Good luck on your purchase. I think if you picked one up.. and stuck with it, you'll be finding some good finds. I would say this isn't the best detector if you're starting out.. unless you're willing to put the time in. This was my third detector, so kinda new what I wanted out of it.. just needed to figure out the details on how to take advantage of it.

I just bought one and have about 8 hrs on it. It is very different from my Whites 6000 Pro Di sl, much different. I find it very difficult to pinpoint compared to my Whites. To be honest, I am a little discouraged with it. I'm sure this machine is excellent in the right hands but so far I just really don't understand it. I've read the manual half a dozen times. I'm not giving up, there are too many people who believe that this is the best machine so I'm going to go through the learning curve albeit painfully.

i love mine! like was stated before, its heavy, expensive, and can be tough to pinpoint with ( a little), but my good finds ratio has skyrocketed since buying one.

You speak the truth! I think the real secret to switching to the SE is to adapt to the machine.. not the other way around. Once you commit to the machine.. it'll blow you away. I'm just scratching the surface, but I'm constantly amazed.

Your pinpointing will improve as you dig more coins. I have dug thousands of coins and I use a WOT or a Sun Ray 12 coil and I can just about hit the coin 99 out of 100 times with my probe. If it is on edge I dig a 2" plug and stick my X-1 probe in the hole and pop it out. Patience, a DD takes a little longer to learn

Hey Kieth...part of your problem might be you are using it like you used your Whites and its a different beast. When I bought my first Explorer I used it like my XLT and was soooo frustrated. A friend who had a Minelab had a sit down, then we went and hunted, he showed me his hits and checked mine. From the time I stopped thinking it was my XLT and finding my first silver(1899 Barber Quarter at 9 inches) coin it has been all ahead go!!! This is not a hit on you, but thinking that might be the problem and this is just from my own personal experience!! Don't give up and hook up with someone who does KNOW how to use a Minelab Explorer!! Good Luck!!
