Exploring an old farm built in 1900 in Indiana and found these two items near where the old wash house once stood. The appear to be made of brass and are 7.5 inches long. Each has one end that looks like it might pivot in an opening and the other end is blunt. Does anyone know what these are? Thanks for your help. what is it pair.webpwhat is it.webpWhat is it pivot.webpWhat is it blunt end.webp

I don't have a clue what they're for/from, but good job on showing measurements.

They look like something from horse&buggy harness, some of that stuff was quite elaborate.

Might be some type of trivet to hold iron????????

Maybe it's a handle you would grab onto when getting into a buggy

Real unusual mounting though, huh ? it's just not clicking yet.

Yeah, and the worst part is, something feels like I should know what it's from.

Ok, think I got it. Not sure though, but maybe part of a shelf bracket. Not necessarily from a bookshelf, but maybe from the top portion of an ornate wood stove (the warming oven). Might also be "part" of shelf brackets - the diagonal parts that support the weight. Maybe they broke away, or were broken away from shelf brackets.

Thoughts??

C'mon Bruce - you gotta know this! :icon_thumright:

Maybe from a old dresser

Maybe from a bradley & hubbard urn or lamp .

kcm mentioned a wood stove and somethings starting to click but I'm at work right now and can't check it until I get home. They're not heavy enough for warming cabinet brackets, BUT , I had a potbelly stove in my living room and it had a fancy finial thing on the top that was hollow and made up of several pieces. On either side was fancy doo dads like these pieces forming sort of like wings. I don't know how to send the address, but if you google "coal stove finial " you'll find a shitload of them things

I found a match right where I told you but this iPad won't let me save the image and pass it on.

Well, I was all ready to throw in the towel and declare Bruce the champ - again! However, I haven't yet found an exact match, and have found too many other near matches from various other things. ...I might be bald by the time this is finished!

One thing I can;t help but have to ask now - are we certain this is brass? It's obviously cast, but "could it be" cast iron?? Is it magnetic?

Google coal stove finial , you'll get an eBay ad with 5 pictures , click view all , count down 29 rows, right in the center. Nickel plated.

You guys are great! That's exactly what it is. I found a couple of pictures showing an exact match and another showing the two pieces separate from the rest of the final and the two different ends were very apparent. Thank you Bruce R.!

How in the hell did you pull a photo off a website and post it here ???

Ok, that's it! I need a new pair of glasses!!

There the thing was staring me in the face and I still didn't see it. SHEESH!!

I would say that maybe I should go back to bed, but I just came from bed! :laughing9:

It was the way the things attached that kept bugging me. I took my stove all apart to paint it and that finial is 6 or 8 different pieces all held together by one long skinny bolt, it's a real S.O.B. to put together by yourself. When kcm mentioned a stove it just clicked.
