Panning Question

How would I, (from the U.S.) go about recreational panning in northwestern Ontario?
Our family goes on bi-annual fishing trips up near Gearldton and I have always thought it would be fun to take an afternoon and try to do a little panning. But, I have never done it because I cant find anything about laws/permits to do so. I would like to take a pan up with me next time, but dont know what I would need to do.

Any help would be great.
