I dug this in the same area I've been finding shotgun shells from the late 1800's through the early 1900's (but also a ton of modern trash and coins). Based on its design, it doesn't look like other buttons I've seen from that time period. It was very rusty (which I realize is meaningless) so I did clean it with some electrolysis and a brass brush. In the pics below I have two pictures of the front of it (pre and post-cleaning), and two pictures of the back of it from different angles. The back appears to have one triangular shaped clasp and series of smaller rectangular clasps. Is this part of an old button, and if so, how old? Thanks for any help on this!

yup, for a 3/4 inch hole in a junction box(when you accidentally bust out the wrong knock-out)
