All, the artifact shown below was found near a former 1 room school house built in 1854. In 1924 the schools were consolidated and the building was converted into a farm shed which was demolished in the 1970s. According to a description the school originally had a wood stove. In about 1886 it was replaced with an L-shaped coal stove. It is cast iron and measures 11” by 7” by 1”. The diameter of the arc is about 16.6”. My guess is that it is part of a wood stove grate, but would like to know what it really is and its age. About 10 feet away I found 3 pieces of a school desk. A neighbor said he used to play in the farm shed in the 1960s and recalls seeing pieces of broken school desks in the building.

I was originally thinking along those lines, until I read that the coal stove was L-shaped.
