Yeah part of an old cap gun seems like a good possibility.

It seems pretty heavy for a cap gun. Found it at an old toll house where there has been civil war activity as well as WWII training

I'd say it's a trigger assembly out of a real gun. I have no idea what gun. Hrer's an example.
