After being so busy all winter and this spring, I finally got out to a few new places I've acquired lately. I'm a huge chicken s##t at door-knocking, however, on my way to one permission I saw an OLD house which I suspected as being a log home, with a newer house built around it. Seeing the owner out in the yard, I wheeled in. He came right over, SUPER nice guy. I asked him about the house, and yes, log home built 1804. He asked me if I wanted a tour...I don't even think I opened my door and just jumped out the window...omg, awesome inside. It was in bad shape from years of neglect, and in a few areas where the lathing had came off, you could see the exposed logs, with the cherry bark still intact! The huge stone fireplace was built in a manner that it serviced 2 different rooms. The owner lives in a modern house beside it. Having free rein to hunt, I snatched my gear out and got to detect for 30 mins until a huge storm rolled in. 2nd signal was a Mercury dime with a lot of tarnish, I handed it to the owners 5-6 yr old grandson and explained that it was a silver dime, and he could clean it up and make it nice. Gramps was impressed and gave me permission to hunt any time! The heartbreak find was the silver dollar sized, reeded-edged James Garfield token. Seeing the reeded edge in the hole almost stopped my heart, along with the fact that it really looked silver, but knew otherwise as it was very light, aluminum. Also puzzling was the fact that aluminum will usually tarnish or pit when in the ground a while, (was about 6-7" deep), and was almost perfect. I'll be back there very soon! The other finds were at a couple private houses in town, one built 1880's, the other 1940. The ring was found at the fairground parking lot, along with the V-nickel and Scout kerchief slide. Thx for looking, was glad to have some worthy items to post, Ddf.

Thx! And yes, let's hope he enjoyed his little treasure...was funny watching the little guy, was doing his best to wrangle a roto-tiller around the garden, with his shorts and rubber boots...it was dragging him around but he never gave up! Ddf.

Well done on the finds, and good show giving the youngster a silver coin. If you get them hooked early, they will become lifelong users!

Thx Tom, Gramps told me that the little guy had dragged a cheap detector around the yard, and was really heartbroken about finding nothing but nuts, bolts and nails. He was interested in my detecting but respected my space...unlike others kids who jump in your hole, grab your pinpointer and snatch your finds. Great little guy, and while he did not currently comprehend the significance of that little dime, one day he will. Passing it forward! Ddf.

That car is super super super cool! Good stuff brother.

Funny thing MK, that car was pulled from my in-laws yard...nothing of significance there, house not very old, and surrounded by corn fields on 2 sides and woods on another...the car was over 10" down and rang up like a can at 4". A lot of deep signals there I'm going to go after soon. Thx, Ddf.

Great story and great all around post - thanks, and congrats to you! :icon_thumleft:

Well thanks MsBeep! I just LOVE that feeling you get when you hand something to a kid, and while he knows it's really cool..well the ear to ear grin said it all. Ddf
