I found this item in my side field today. It is about the size of a loonie so I would think it is too big to be a button. Also, it has a patent number. Were buttons Patented?

The back is a corroded crust, unfinished...must have been iron...any ideas?

It's probably a design patent number. If you can read the full number, I'll try to post a link to the patent drawings/documents. And yes, quite a few buttons were patented, both for design and utility— although whether this item is a button, I can't say.
