there were times in history when differant things were popular.chemistry sets,telescopes,stamp collecting.....and even metal stamping coins to see if they ever show up again.

"Where's George" dollar bills are a good current example of marking and tracking currency to see where it ends up. I log in all the "Where's George" bills I find. Very interesting to see where the bill goes and how long it took to get there.
