I found these pendants in the same field as the Kirk Corner Notch I posted earlier. The black one is made of channel coal, I believe. It seems to be shaped like a turtle head or something. It has an open mouth below the "eye". The mouth has a little damage on the edges. I had thought that it was another hole, but it would have been a little too close to the edge.
The other pendant seems to be made of hematite. It is a pretty heavy for it's size.

I am speechless! :o :o I wanna go hunting with you also, please!

Hey Country Girl! Thanks for the post! I looked down that one day and saw the "turtle" pendant and thought that my eyes were playing tricks on me! I picked it up, wiped it off, and couldn't believe what I was seeing. It is light as a feather!

Thanks for the post!

Good luck!

What are the chances of another member living in the same city? That's pretty cool! I noticed the cannon in your pic. Do you belong to any of the local civil war groups? I have a brother-in-law (lives in Nicholasville also) who built his own mountain howitzer cannon. He does a lot of work with the Camp Nelson honor guards. His cannon sometimes jumps off the ground when he fires it. I think he uses just a little too much powder sometimes! ;D
Maybe we can meet up one afternoon.

Thanks for posting!

I used to be on the CN Board of Directors, but don't have the time to attend meetings anymore. I metal detect more than I look for indian rocks, but it's an alternative when I get a chance.

Send me a pm sometime and we can talk and maybe go out. I know of at least one more member who lives here in Jessamine Co.

Very nice- hard enough to find arrowheads around here, can't imagine how cool it would be to find these!

Thanks Jeff! That channel coal material is very delicate. I try not to handle it very much. One accidental drop would definitely be the end of it.

Hey Cannonman! I was excited beyond words when I found them! I called my wife on her cell phone to tell her when I found the one made of hematite. She said "Okay, so you found a rock with a hole in it". She was kidding me. She could tell that I had really found something good.

Good luck!

Good luck this fall Adena man! We just got a little bake to get through, then it will be here before you know it. Just a few guestions. Whats channel coal? How do you know if a material is channel coal? Thanks!

Hey Bean Man! It is kind of like shale. It is very, very lightweight. It is also very fragile. It flakes away with the least amount of pressure. That's all I really know about it. The indians loved to use it for pendants, gorgets, and effigies. It was easy to work and shape, plus it was very lightweight to wear.

Thanks for posting.
