The first case of the virus in the state this year was detected in a mosquito May 3 in Exeter Township, Berks County. It was the earliest case since testing started in 2000, the state Department of Health said May 10.

So far this year, five counties in the state - Beaver, Berks, Dauphin, Luzerne and York - have had positive results of mosquitoes that have tested with the virus, according to the state.

Last year, six human cases of the virus were discovered and 59 counties had tested positive for the virus, which is spread mostly by the bite of an infected mosquito after it feeds on an infected bird with the virus.

I used to chase them best with cigarette smoke.
Unfortunately now that I'm a non smoker, I needed to remember to
pack spray regularly also.
I Have my Repel 100 & the last of my Deep Woods ready to go with me next time out.

I'm Guessing with 98.11% DEET, REPEL 100
is Better then the
25% DEET, DEEP WOODS OFF

[h=1]Early emergence of West Nile causes concern[/h]

MOOSIC - A mild winter and a warm spring could mean a record-setting summer for the West Nile virus.

A mosquito in Moosic has already tested positive for the virus - about two months earlier than Lackawanna County has seen in previous years.
"This is unprecedented. This is the earliest ever in Lackawanna County," said Michael Chisdock, West Nile virus program coordinator for Lackawanna County.
The early emergence of mosquitoes testing positive for the virus throughout the state has officials alarmed. Due to budget cuts, fewer people will be available to monitor the situation locally.
